A universe of local materials

Hundreds of local materials from Denmark and the Nordic countries

Using local materials is a way of connecting with my surroundings and nature. Its a way of telling a story about our amazing nature, history and geology.

I test the materials in order to learn about their unique properties. The raw materials undergo a refining process or are applied directly to the surface, mixed into the clay or used as slips or glazes. The refinement is limited, so that the properties of the local materials becomes a part of the ceramic object.

Local clays, ashes, sand in beautiful colors, stones, rusty iron, seaweed and different organic materials.

After testing the materials they are used in my ceramic objects - as clay, additives to clay or as raw materials in slips and glazes. I often use fine porcelain clay as a contrast to the raw local clay and materials

I collect the materials because they are interesting for a ceramic perspective, because they represent a geografical area with a special history or because I have personal connection to the geografical area or place

Local clay and lots of ashglazes

My studio is full of endless samples of raw materials and material-tests

Some ceramic objects are fired in wood kilns which brings a level of unpredictability to the finished objects. Firings can take from 1 to 4 days, depending on the kiln and the desired result

Using local materials is a way of working in a more sustainable way. By using less imported materials I leave a smaller foodprint
